I think that the best approach to teaching and learning is the Communicative Approach. As Jeremy Harmer states in his book "The Practice of ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING"; 3rd edition, "Activities in CLT typically involve students in real or realistic communication, where the accuracy of the language they use is less important than successful achievement of the communicative task they are performing"
So, when teaching a language it is important to create a real and meaningful context through which students may feel identified, and so, increase their motivation to use and communicate in the foreign language. Within the activities that foster communicative interaction are role plays, in which students perform different real situations; and many other activites such as preparing a presentation, class surveys, among others.
Besides, within the communicative approach we may develop our lessons through different procedures, methods and approaches. For instance, in my experience with little children the Total Physical Response method was really useful and motivating for students since they loved singing, dancing, and being in constant movement. They learnt while enjoying at the same time. Of course this method is useful for little children, as well as for adolescents and adults.
Moreover, other approaches I think are really useful are CLIL, PPP, and TBL. Through CLIL I presented different topics such as "Recycle" or "Healthy Habits" and at least in my experience, students got really engaged and were willing to participate during my lessons.
Of course, not always the same approach is suitable for all groups of students, so first we need to know the type of learners we are working with, their preferences, likes, needs, among others; and then we need to think the best way, namely, approach, method or procedure, to develop our lessons.
To conclude, I think that the best approach to teaching and learning is the communicative approach, since when teaching a language we need to create the conditions for our students to feel a desire to learn; to increase their motivation; to communicate and use the language meaningfully, and not only to feel gaps or complete unreal texts with verbs, for instance.
