My Teaching Philosophy

First of all I need to say that my teaching philosophy has changed after attending this course of studies. Some time ago, I thought teaching was the transmition of knowledge, from teachers to students, based on a grammar-based approach, as my teachers used to apply when I was learning English at an Institute.
However, my view has changed since now I can say that teaching a language involves much more than transmitting grammatical knowledge from teachers to students.
According to Hedge (2007), "the learning situation may be determined by social and educational factors".
So, when teaching a language we need to take many aspects into account, namely, the context where we're teaching, the group of students we're working with, as well as their needs, different learning styles, students' learning time, offering variety of activities according to our students' preferences, to name some.
Moreover, when teaching a foreign language, we are getting our students to know a different culture, so it is of paramount importance to offer them many opportunities to work with authentic material that will let them understand, use, and be part of that new language and culture.

To conclude, my teaching philosophy has to do with doing my best to help my students develop different cognitive skills, and become autonomous individuals, while learning a new language. For that, I need to select different types of material appealing to my students so that they get engaged and motivated in learning the new language while at the same time enjoying it and having fun.
